Hearing Aid Troubleshooting

Hearing aids are sophisticated electronic devices, and even with proper care, occasional issues can occur. Fortunately, many common hearing aid problems are caused by simple things such as earwax buildup, moisture, charging concerns, blocked components, or connectivity settings rather than major electronic failures.

Whether your hearing aids are whistling (feedback), sounding weak or muffled, not producing any sound, experiencing charging problems, or won't connect to Bluetooth, this troubleshooting guide is designed to help you identify common causes and understand a few simple steps you can safely try before scheduling professional service.

If the problem continues after basic troubleshooting, we're here to help evaluate your hearing aids and recommend the most appropriate solution.

🔊 Common Hearing Aid Issues

  • 📢 Feedback or Whistling
  • 🔇 Weak or Muffled Sound
  • ❌ No Sound (Dead Hearing Aid)
  • 🔋 Charging Problems
  • 📱 Bluetooth Won't Connect
  • 💧 Moisture or Water Exposure
  • 👂 Poor Fit or Discomfort
  • 🛠️ General Repair & Troubleshooting

Possible Causes

Here is the breakdown of probable causes.

🔇 No Sound

Possible Causes:
Your hearing aid may have a dead battery, a clogged wax guard, moisture inside the device, or it may simply be turned off. In some cases, it may need professional service.

🎤 Weak or Muffled Sound

Possible Causes:
Wax buildup, dirty microphones, a low battery, moisture, or a hearing aid that isn't inserted properly can all make sounds seem quieter or less clear.

🔊 Whistling or Feedback

Possible Causes:
Whistling usually happens when sound escapes from your ear and is picked up again by the hearing aid. This can be caused by a loose fit, earwax, or an object being too close to the hearing aid.

🔋 Won't Charge

Possible Causes:
The hearing aid may not be sitting correctly in the charger, the charging contacts may be dirty, or there may be an issue with the charger or rechargeable battery.

🔄 Sound Cutting In and Out

Possible Causes:
A weak battery, moisture, wax buildup, a loose connection, or Bluetooth interruptions can cause your hearing aid to work inconsistently.

💧 Hearing Aid Got Wet

Possible Causes:
Exposure to water, sweat, or humidity can affect your hearing aid's performance. While many hearing aids are moisture-resistant, they are not completely waterproof.

📱 Won't Connect to My Phone

Possible Causes:
Bluetooth may be turned off, the hearing aids may have become disconnected, or your phone or hearing aids may need to be restarted or updated.

🔧 Physical Damage

Possible Causes:
Drops, accidental impacts, or everyday wear can cause cracked shells, broken receiver wires, damaged battery doors, or other parts to stop working properly.

Things You Can Safely Check

Simple things patients can try without damaging the hearing aids.

Examples:

  • Is it turned on?
  • Is it charged?
  • Replace wax guard.
  • Clean dome.
  • Check Bluetooth.
  • Restart hearing aid.

What Not To Do

Examples:

  • Don't insert sharp objects.
  • Don't use alcohol.
  • Don't take the hearing aid apart.
  • Don't continue using damaged hearing aids.
